Energy
The focus at Flevokust Haven is on sustainable energy. For instance, the focus is on solar energy and emission-free construction. In 2019, two large solar fields were installed in the immediate vicinity that have been providing sustainable energy for years. Last year, a study was launched into the possibility of supplying this energy directly to future companies on the site.
An important milestone is the development of a gas-free business park. This is why collective and sustainable energy solutions are being fully exploited. One of the initiatives is the possible construction of a heat network, where residual heat from the Maxima power plant, among others, can be reused.
Steps have also been taken in the field of emission-free construction traffic. Work is increasingly being carried out with electric equipment and even hydrogen generators. In addition, public spaces are more energy-efficient, with smart lighting and more efficient pumping stations.
Waste and circular economy
Waste policy at Flevokust Haven is based on Lansink's Ladder. Waste streams are separated and reused as much as possible. For each project, a work plan is drawn up in advance, setting out how released materials and packaging materials will be separated, processed and disposed of. This mainly concerns asphalt and packaging materials.
The use of new raw materials has also been reduced. Through smart design choices, up to 35 per cent less asphalt is needed and concrete products consist partly of recycled materials. This contributes to a lower environmental impact of the project.
Mobility
In the field of mobility, efforts are being made for cleaner and more efficient transport. Safe cycling and walking paths will be created, the first of which have already been constructed. In addition, smart traffic controls are being developed to improve traffic flow and reduce emissions. Later, a solution for public transport will be sought together with the companies.
Physical environment
One of the key components of Flevokust Haven's sustainable ambition is the physical living environment. For example, as much as 99 per cent of the soil released will be reused and nature development will be actively pursued. In the southern part of the area, a new forest with waterways will be created, serving as habitat for various animal species, such as bats, otters and marten.
Fauna passages ensure that animals can move safely between nature areas. Biodiversity is also addressed with herb-rich planting and animal-friendly lighting.
Future-proof
The site is also designed with climate change in mind. Trees and greenery provide cooling and reduce heat stress (total shade projection of 79.4%), while wadis collect rainwater and prevent flooding. Thanks to its location near the IJsselmeer and a strong flood defence system, the area is well protected against flooding.
Flevokust Haven shows that the development of a new business park can go hand in hand with sustainability. In the coming years, work will continue to realise and monitor these sustainability ambitions.
