Hydrogen as energy source in sewer construction
Together with our partners, we are working on Flevokust Haven for a future that is not only good for companies, but also for the environment and people living in Lelystad. A great example of this is the construction of the new sewer system, carried out by KWS Infra. Special about this project: it will be realised completely emission-free, using hydrogen as an energy source, among other things.
Exclusively electric equipment
When tendering for projects such as this one, Lelystad Municipality explicitly steers towards reducing environmental impact. In doing so, there is plenty of room for innovative and climate-conscious implementation methods. The municipality therefore challenged KWS to carry out the construction of the sewerage as sustainably as possible.
A challenge that KWS gladly accepted, as the company has the ambition to work completely emission-free by 2030. This means: no exhaust fumes, no diesel smell and no unnecessary noise. And therefore also no harmful substances that affect air quality.
At the construction site at Flevokust Haven, this can already be clearly seen. Only electric equipment is used. For example, there is an electric crawler crane and the drainage pumps are fully electric. Thanks to this emission-free approach, the construction site operates with virtually no emissions and less noise. This is pleasant for the employees, but also for the companies and residents of Flevokust Haven.
For the municipality, this is a concrete example of how sustainability, innovation and employment go hand in hand. By choosing clean technologies and sustainable mobility at Flevokust Port, Lelystad is actively contributing to a healthier and future-proof living environment for everyone.
Sustainable power solution
Sustainable projects sometimes involve new challenges. For instance, the drainage pumps need power day and night. Initially, KWS wanted to solve this with battery boxes. Although these provide clean energy, they had to be moved daily. Not an ideal approach for a construction site where work is continuous.
The solution came from Watermeln with their hydrogen generator. This unit generates electricity using hydrogen instead of diesel. The big advantage: no emissions, hardly any noise and much more efficient in use. Moreover, the hydrogen container only needs to be changed once every fortnight. That saves time and makes the construction site even more sustainable.
